Denmark is the first country in the world to offer a label that shows the environmental impact of our food

The idea is to create a clear and complete environmental label that helps consumers in their daily sustainability choices

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

All of us, when we are in the supermarket, try to be attentive to the origin of the food we are buying, to the presence of unspecified preservatives and chemicals, to prefer recyclable and plastic-free wrapping, to choose seasonal and zero-kilometer products. But who assures us that what we put in the cart is truly sustainable and zero impact?

Very often, in fact, labels are misleading for inexperienced consumers. Often a green wrapping or the wording "BIO" is enough to seduce those who want to reduce their environmental impact, but who very often end up buying products that have nothing to do with sustainability.

For this reason, the Danish government is preparing to launch a unique environmental label on the market for food on the market - in order to help consumers choose the most sustainable products. A fund of 1,2 million euros has already been allocated for this project, launched by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Denmark must have the world's first climate label on food - writes the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Rasmus Prehn, on their Facebook page. - A brand we can trust, which should help us make green choices when we shop. Branding must be simple and easy to understand when shopping at the supermarket! And it should, as far as possible, be based on the total climate impact of the individual food along the entire value chain.

Indeed, it is not the first time that we have heard of such a label. Let's remember for example Eco-Store, a label born in France to provide information on the health impact of food. The products are divided into five categories (each indicated with a letter from A to E and with a color code from green to red). Products with minimal environmental impact deserve an A and a green leaf, the less green ones are marked with the letter E and a red leaf.

The Eco-Store label, as well as others that have been launched in recent years, are mostly the result of private initiatives, animated by judgment criteria that are not always transparent and truly environmentally friendly - which is why no proposal has yet managed to convince the point to become mandatory.

The Danish project, on the other hand, is to give a single national voice to the environmental footprint of all food products marketed in the country, in order to eliminate all other initiatives and thus avoid confusing the consumer who has to choose. what to buy. Affixing the new environmental label will in any case be a voluntary choice of individual food producers.
