Lip stick with UV filters: Watch out for titanium dioxide and other substances. Labello among the worst in the test

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

UV protection is important not only in summer and not just on the skin. Even in winter, for example, especially if we go to the snow, we need a good lip stick with a filter that can protect them from the sun. However, a test reveals that it is good to pay attention to what we buy, avoiding products that contain questionable ingredients within them.

A test from the German magazine Öko-Test compared 21 lip care sticks with UV protection purchased in pharmacies and supermarkets (including organic ones). The products all had an SPF between 20 and 50+.

For each stick, experts checked the ingredient list to see if there were any problematic substances such as questionable UV filters, PEGs and plastic compounds. In addition, each sample was analyzed in special laboratories.

The results

There are only 4 lip sticks with UV protection that get the highest marks, 9 instead the products that do not pass the test obtaining "poor" or "unsatisfactory" and are in fact not recommended.

What are the problems encountered in these products? The presence of different ingredients such as petroleum-derived paraffins that some brands still use, these can be contaminated with mineral oil components (actually found in 3 cases).

But the test criticizes above all the presence of the much discussed titanium dioxide (TiO2), a mineral UV filter. We recall that last summer EFSA established that the safety of the product cannot be confirmed if this substance is used as a food additive and it was established that from this year it can no longer be added to food or drinks. In the case of lip sticks, of course, it is not about food and therefore, at least in theory, there is no risk of ingestion, but if we consider what product we are talking about we realize that in reality there is a risk.

As the German experts recall:

We can ingest some traces of lip cosmetics that can go up to 57 milligrams per day. This is according to the calculations of the EU body responsible for evaluating cosmetics, SCCS.

It has not yet been clarified to what extent the data on E171 as a food additive can be transferred to titanium dioxide for cosmetic use. EFSA points out that it did not consider the possible oral intake of titanium dioxide from cosmetics in its assessment. However, as a precaution it would be better to choose lip cosmetics that do not contain it.

In the test there are 9 sticks that contain titanium dioxide as a UV filter or as a dye, in the latter case it appears in the list of ingredients with the words CI 77891.

Then there is another critical point reported by the test: the declaration of mineral UV filters. If more than half of the titanium dioxide or zinc oxide particles are nanoscale, the Cosmetics Ordinance requires theaddition of "nano" in the list of ingredients after substances. By measuring the particles in the laboratory, the test found that six lip sticks lacked the wording "nano".

However, titanium dioxide isn't the only problem encountered in these lip products. In fact, other equally critical chemical UV filters have also been found. These penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and convert UV rays into heat. Some even have the ability to enter the bloodstream.

We speak in particular of thehomosalate, long suspected of acting as a hormone, as well as other filters such asethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, benzophenone-3 and octocrylene.

Other problematic ingredients identified in lip sticks are some organohalogen compounds, many representatives of this group of substances can in fact cause allergies.
