Erasers: these are the best to buy in stationery, according to the new Altroconsumo test

Altroconsumo promotes all white erasers but invites you to avoid colored ones that may contain dangerous substances

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

The school has begun and in our children's pencil cases the eraser cannot be missing, a small but indispensable tool both for those who draw and for the little ones who may be learning to write or deal with the help of the pencil. But what are the best tires on the market? The new Altroconsumo test revealed it.

The survey compared 15 white erasers, the most popular on the market, and 12 colored and scented erasers, purchased both in stores and online.

The colored rubbers were analyzed in the laboratory to see if there were controversial substances in their composition, more specifically they were tested for over 100 chemicals prohibited by the toy legislation in which, however, Altroconsumo points out, the rubbers are not included.

The white ones were instead evaluated by a jury of 253 consumers who tested them impartially (given that the brand had been made unrecognizable), taking into account various characteristics and finally expressing an overall judgment.

Finally, the magazine's experts evaluated the label and packaging of the tires, also taking into account environmental sustainability.

The results

All white tires, even if with some differences, come out well from the test and do not present any chemical risk.

As we read in the magazine:

they are made of synthetic material and do not contain latex (present instead in natural rubbers produced by the chemical processing of the latex extracted from the tree). They do not contain dyes, perfumes or preservatives, which can pose health risks.

As for the evaluations, the jury of consumers showed a greater appreciation for tires that are soft to the touch, easy to use, flexible enough and that do not leave too many residues, while evaluating badly those that are too hard, slippery or with a floury consistency.

Among the best there are also the cheapest tires, which shows once again that to have a quality product it is not always necessary to spend more.

Il best buy and the Carrefour white rubber which costs 0.99 euros (two pieces). There best rubber of the test it is instead the white vinyl Pigna.

The colored tires

The situation is different for colored and perfumed rubbers, which the magazine generally discourages even if it was in particular one that aroused attention as it contains potentially dangerous substances and prohibited by the legislation on toys.

It is the Fishawk - Fruit pencil erasers, made of PVC (possible carcinogen) and found to contain high amounts of one phthalate (DEHP), endocrine disruptor prohibited in toys. As we said before, however, everything is in accordance with the law as rubber is a stationery item and not a toy. However, it is clear that in these cases the legislation should be revised.

The other colored and / or perfumed gums do not contain dangerous substances or contain them in irrelevant traces. Considering that this was a champion and the market is much larger and it is possible to run into similar situations, Altroconsumo does not recommend tires of this type anyway.

There is also another controversial aspect of colored and scented gums to consider: they look a little too much like a food and younger children may be tempted to put them in their mouth with all the risks involved.

The labels

Many labels do not provide detailed information, you can find the manufacturer's contacts and the country of origin but not for example the indication of use, the material with which the tires are made and the dimensions, which would allow the consumer to better compare the products on the market.

Furthermore, no manufacturer indicates where to properly dispose of rubber and its residues. Most of the consumers who have tested white tires, however, already knew: they must be thrown in the unsorted bin.
