Plastic and endocrine disruptors in Biotherm colored day cream, the results of the German test

There is a huge range of colored day creams on store shelves, but not all products are recommended. A new German test unmasks a well-known brand, which is, among other things, excessively expensive

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

It fails with the degree of "insufficient" the tinted cream Biotherm Aquasource BB Cream SPF 15 which, with its 33,32 euros per 50 milliliters, turns out to be one of the most expensive products on the market. And not only that: within it a series of harmful substances, including plastic and dangerous endocrine disruptors.

This is what emerges from a new analysis conducted by the German magazine Öko-Test, which compared a series of colored day creams. Of these, Biotherm's tinted day cream only got an "inadequate" rating. Especially for the presence of suspicious substances.

Cosmetics have too many endocrine disruptors, Rimmel BB cream is the worst product in the test

But what are the offending substances in Biotherm colored day cream?

Index

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate

Let's start with a controversial UV filter: Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate.

It is suspected to be a endocrine disruptor and its maximum concentration allowed in cosmetics is 10%.

Its functions:

  • is a stabilizing agent: it improves the ingredients or the stability of the formulations and the shelf life
  • it is a UV absorbent: that is, it protects the cosmetic from the effects of UV rays
  • it is a UV filter: it filters some UV rays to protect the skin or hair from the harmful effects of the rays

There are also criticisms for the butylated hydroxytoluene antioxidant (BHT). It aims to prevent or delay changes in smell, color or structure caused by contact with oxygen.

However, it is also suspected of acting as a hormone. We therefore devalue the use of BHT. In addition to Biotherm day cream, another reviewed product contains BHT.

Butilidrossituoluene (BHT)

It is a primary antioxidant, i.e. a hydrogen donor which acts by interrupting the chain reaction, triggered by free radicals, which leads to the degradation of fatty acids.

Its presence is intended to prevent or delay changes in smell, color or structure caused by contact with oxygen.

However, it is also suspected endocrine disruptor.

Silicones

In addition, Biotherm's tinted day cream contains silicones and paraffins. And we know it well by now: synthetic petroleum-based greases are often contaminated with aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH). These may contain carcinogenic substances.

The lab experts did not find MOAH in the Biotherm cream, but it would be better if there were no paraffins in it either.

Liquid plastics (PEG compounds)

They are often used as emulsifiers to bind oil and water together, PEG compounds are also present in tinted cream Biotherm.

PEGs or polyethylene glycols are petroleum-based compounds used in cosmetics to keep ingredients stable and improve the penetration of other active ingredients. PEGs are typically followed by a number indicating how many units of ethylene glycol they contain, for example PEG-4 or PEG-100 (the lower the number, the more easily the compound is absorbed by the skin).

These synthetic substances can then be contaminated by the presence of 1,4 dioxane, a chemical that the United States government has identified as a probable human carcinogen.
