Sun creams: 73% are not fully effective or contain worrying ingredients (THE LIST)

73% of sunscreens do not work as they should. This is the alarm raised in the 11th edition of the guide on sun protection drawn up by the Environmental Working Group's (EWG), an American environmental working group that has tested the effectiveness of over 1400 products.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

73% of sunscreens do not work as they should. This is the alarm raised by the 11th edition of the guide on sun creams drawn up by the Environmental Working Group's (EWG), the American environmental working group that tested theeffectiveness of over 1400 products.

When we spread a sunscreen on our skin or that of our children we do it convinced that we are protecting our health as best we can. The fact is, as the EWG warns, not all products are made the same way. According to the 2017 guidance from the Environmental Working Group, nearly three-quarters of the products analyzed showed a protection against the sun lower than that declared or the presence of potentially dangerous ingredients such as oxybenzone, an endocrine disruptor, and retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A that can damage the skin.

It is not the first time that the EWG has raised the alarm on solar and every year the result of their investigations is more or less the same. Experts believe sunscreens won't improve until the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) takes a clear stance, sets stronger rules, re-examines harmful chemicals, and allows the use of new ingredients that offer greater protection. from UVA rays.

According to the EWG, sunscreen products with a high SPF (sun protection factor) (especially those over 50) they don't actually protect much more of those considered low and are potentially dangerous as the people who use them have a false sense of security. For example, they think they can spend more time in the sun, perhaps without putting the cream back on because they are convinced that the high protection factor will protect them in the long term.

Keep in mind that the research was carried out on products available on the American market but there are also some sun creams sold in our country. Try entering the brand you use in the EWG search engine.

How to choose a sunscreen

In its guide, the EWG provides some useful tips for choosing the best sunscreen.

Even in the case of sunscreens, reading the Inci, or the list of ingredients used, can make a difference. It is recommended that the sunscreens contain zinc oxide, avobenzone and mexoryl sx., Which are actually cream, have broad spectrum protection (both UVB and UVA) with an SPF ranging from 15 to 50 depending on the needs and are water resistant.

SUN CREAMS, What to avoid

The guide does not recommend the use of sunscreen in spray as there is a greater risk that the skin is not evenly covered by the protection and there is the possibility of inadvertently inhaling the product.

As for the list of ingredients, however, we recommend avoid products that contain: oxybenzone, vitamin A (retinyl palmitate) or insecticides or repellents are added to it. It is also better to leave sunscreens with an SPF above 50 on the shelves.
