“We Are The World”: the hymn of peace turns 37 today more relevant than ever

"We Are The World" turns 37. On March 7, 1985, the song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritiche was released, made for charity. The funds raised, over 100 million dollars, were entirely donated to the population of Ethiopia, afflicted at that time by a disastrous famine.

The single, produced by Quincy Jones and recorded by USA for Africa ("USA" stands for "United Support Artists"), a supergroup of 45 music celebrities, reached the top of the charts worldwide and became the best-selling song in the history of music up to that point. He received 4 Grammy Awards.

Twenty-one singers alternate as solo voices: Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Dionne Warwick, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram , Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Huey Lewis, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall and Kim Carnes, all the others did the choir of USA for Africa with great spirit of participation, including Harry Belafonte, where it all began.

A hymn of peace and brotherhood today more relevant than ever. His message without borders strikes us to the heart even today, despite the past years, drawing our attention to every single suffering community.

We are the world

There comes a time
When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it’s time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can’t go on
Pretending day-by-day
That someone, somewhere soon make a change
We’re all a part of God’s great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need

We are the world, We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving

There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day, just you and me

Oh, send them your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world, We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving

Oh, there’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day, just you and me

When you’re down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there’s no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize

Oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one, yeah, yeah, yeah

We are the world, We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving

There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day, just you and me

We are the world, We are the children
