A group of violin makers in Brazil recycles PVC pipes to create violins and cellos for children in difficult economic situations
The PVC, used in plumbing systems, is creatively recycled in the city of Santo Andre in Brazil: some luthiers have transformed the material into violins for dozens of young musicians.
The Locomotive initiative, which offers free music lessons to low-income children and adolescents in the ABC Region, has found a way in PVC waste pipes to make musical instruments accessible even to children in difficult economic situations. Now, thanks to this material, many young people can afford a violin or a cello.
It is a PVC tube that becomes a violin, with which we make music, play, do a lot of interesting things. This is magic.

The idea was born in 2018 and proved to be an excellent expedient to allow many young people between 7 and 17 years to own a violin or a cello
In addition to violins, the project also produces cellos and has its own orchestra.
It is a process that requires some work and time. The manufacturing process consists of 42 steps, from cutting and heating the tube to framing and trimming the tool.
said Ivan da Silva Oliveira, a luthier who builds violins for the project.
Donations of PVC pipes come from the petrochemical company Braskem, one of the sponsors of the project, which makes the raw material available.
It's a sensational thing, knowing that a tube that carried water now carries musicsaid Gabriel Santos Espinoza, 11, one of the students on the project, hugging his PVC violin.
