Stop Food Waste, no more food waste. It is promoted by the Ue, which estimated how much food is thrown away each year in Europe. 90 million tons, the equivalent of 180 kilograms each. And the bad news isn't over. Globally, about one third of food destined for human consumption is wasted: in the figure this is about 1,3 billion tons per year, according to the FAO.

This affects the pockets of consumers but above all on the health of the planet. Suffice it to say that food production and consumption generate 20-30% of the environmental impact of the European Union, 17% of direct greenhouse gas emissions, using 28% of material resources in the EU. Not to mention the other environmental impacts related to energy consumption, land use, water use, biodiversity loss, and finally waste production.

We need to put a stop to this unbridled race. Everyone in their own small way can reduce waste, saving money and protecting the environment. How? The EU has provided some advice, good practices to follow to minimize waste at the table with a few simple gestures. Good practice is plan the weekly shopping, thinking about what to prepare day by day during the week. Once this is done, enough buy only what you need When you go to the supermarket, it is also useful to read the labels and the expiry date carefully, preferring a food with a more distant date, especially if you do not intend to consume it immediately. This way you will avoid throwing it. It should also be remembered that the Expiration date it is the recommended one, so it is possible to consume the food even in the immediately following days.

Watch out also for leftovers. Why throw them away if they can also be eaten the next day? Bread is also part of this discourse. Storing it in the freezer is a great alternative to the garbage can.

    Why not start this Christmas?
