Recycling plastic is no longer enough, we must gradually eliminate it to reduce pollution in the seas

A letter from a team of scientists draws worldwide attention to the problem of plastic pollution, recalling that the only solution available to us is its gradual elimination as recycling it no longer serves the point where we are at the moment.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

In today's world, plastic is undoubtedly among the worst pollutants on the whole planet. Produced from petroleum, plastic materials doubly compromising a whole series of already very fragile ecosystems, and not least human health, being dispersed into the environment and reaching every point. Suffice it to say that in the Mediterranean alone, over 730 tons of plastic waste reach the sea every day.

Its disposal represents one of the challenges on the agenda for science and research that are patenting solutions capable of being able to decompose it quickly. There is in fact too much plastic in the world and its natural decomposition process is infinitely long. (Read also: Enzyme created capable of breaking down plastic in just a few hours)

However, while we are committed to properly recycling PET bottles, flasks and other packaging, some experts argue that these actions are no longer sufficient in the long term since this type of pollution no longer excludes any watercourse as well as any soil or even none of them. we saw that microplastics have been found even in human blood and over the years we have seen the creation of a new marine habitat made of plastic: the plastisphere.

Researchers have in fact written a letter to the journal Science, presenting a report on the current situation of plastic pollution in the seas that can only be countered by gradually eliminating the use of plastic and using sustainable alternatives to this harmful material that do not understand it. .

Even if we recycled better and tried to manage waste as much as possible, we would be releasing more than 17 million tons of plastic per year into nature.

said Melanie Bergmann of the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, one of the experts who signed the letter.

The only plausible solution to reduce the disastrous pollution of plastic is therefore the elimination of this since the production of plastic does not intend to decelerate yet. However, it is a long time since we have exceeded the planetary limits that our Planet can tolerate. (Read also: We have exceeded the maximum limit of plastic and chemical pollutants of the planet)
