Between Messina and Reggio Calabria there is an underwater landfill. Here are the terrible images that prove it

The problem of waste at sea is increasingly dramatic also in our country. Now to confirm how this situation is out of control come the terrible images taken by an underwater camera in the Strait of Messina.

The problem of waste at sea is increasingly dramatic also in our country. Now to confirm how this situation is out of control come some terrible images shooting from a underwater camera nello Strait of Messina.

At the bottom of the sea between Reggio Calabria and Messina there is really everything: from dolls to kitchen stoves, from tires to shoes and clothes, from pots and ladles to toys of all kinds, from mattresses to electric cables, from old cassettes to toilet brushes. Even a car was found thrown into the sea by some uncivilized person (who decided to scrape it) and then it remained there because obviously no one bothered to remove it. In short, it is about

The dramatic situation was documented by an underwater video camera piloted by cable from the CNR ship “Minerva Uno” used by the geologists of the CNR and the “La Sapienza” University of Rome. This has traveled over 6 kilometers reaching a depth of 600 meters in 4 points of the Strait of Messina, two on the Sicilian side and two on the Calabrian side, a short distance from the coast (only 1 or 2 km).

Initially, the studio had to deal with creating a geological map of the seabed at a depth of one thousand meters. What the researchers faced, however, left them so open-mouthed that they decided to investigate the problem of submarine litter better:

“In 2016 we returned to the Strait with the RitMare project. This time the precise aim was to study urban waste on the seabed. We found them in astounding quantities, ”said Francesco Latino Chiocci, marine geology teacher at Sapienza University in Rome.

The scientists' work which consists of a series of terrifying underwater images was published in Scientific Reports.

The researchers have cataloged 4000 pieces in all: most of the waste have measures ranging from 10 to 50 centimeters and are mainly located on the Sicilian side of the strait. Obviously the main material is plastic: 52% of the garbage found is soft plastic and 26% rigid plastic. The rest are building materials, wood and clothing. All of this waste comes from the many streams in the area.

It is the first time that a scenario of this magnitude has been documented at the bottom of the sea, the garbage that was found is of such a density as to be a thousand times higher than that identified in the seabed in other studies. Of course, what is worrying are the effects that this landfill, which is located so deep, has on the marine ecosystem. Among other things, the camera only managed to reach a depth of 600 meters and the question remains as to what is even further down. Of course, there is a fear of a similar or even more dramatic situation.

As Professor Chiocci rightly points out ours will be remembered as the era of Geo Monnezza!
