These magpies teach us a lesson in recycling by exchanging caps for food. Hans Forsberg's BirdBoxes

BirdBox is the fantastic feeder for our bird friends that only feeds birds carrying bottle caps.

BirdBox is the fantastic feeder for our bird friends that feeds birds carrying bottle caps.

Hans Forsberg, expert in robotics and artificial intelligence, with the help of his BirdBox, an extraordinary bird feeder, managed to convince the magpies of his Swedish neighborhood to collect the caps thrown in the street and recycle them in exchange for food, making them thus to carry out the work of separate collection that those who have thrown them away should have done. An exciting project that teaches us a lesson: nature can be much more civil than some people.

It all began when one day Hans saw magpies browsing his garden trying to open the complex locks of the external lights to “steal” the candles they contained. Then he thought that his fowl friends could do more useful tasks. So he decided to build a car and try to get them to pick up the garbage nearby in exchange for food.

After years of work and multiple tests, Forsberg managed to create the BirdBox dispenser, using a combination of mechanical design, electronics and a 3D printer, which detects when a magpie deposits the bottle cap in the hole, providing them with food in exchange.

Here is a video of the magpies cleaning the neighborhood and recycling:

When the snow came, the magpie went into confusion:

But a few days were enough to be able to understand "the incentive collection" again:

Nobody can question the intelligence of birds. Corvids - such as magpies and crows - and some parrots are capable of cognitive feats comparable to those of great apes. Crows, for example, can recognize human faces. Magpies are known for collecting objects and now we can also say for recycling ... in spite of the many human beings who have not yet learned how to do it.
