A practically intact chicken egg was found, dating back to about 1.000 years ago. The incredible find during an archaeological excavation in Yavne, central district of Israel.

While excavating an Islamic period cesspool in the Israeli city of Yavne, archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority made an astounding discovery - a more than a thousand-year-old chicken egg that has been perfectly preserved all this time.

Fragments of eggshell have already been found in other archaeological expeditions like this one, and also dating back to more ancient periods, such as in the City of David, in Caesarea and Apollonia - explains professor Lee Perry Gal, who led the excavations. - During our excavations, we usually find oyster eggs, protected by the shells that house them. It's amazing to think that something as fragile as an eggshell has survived for a thousand years - nowadays eggs are short-lived even in modern supermarkets! The extraordinary conservation of this egg is evidently due to the environmental conditions in which it has been found for all these years, hidden in a well and protected from the human excrement that protected it.

Poultry farming was introduced in Israel about 2.300 years ago (during the Hellenistic period in Europe). In the Islamic period (XNUMXth century AD) there is a progressive abandonment of pig farming in the region, corresponding to the religious ban on eating pork, and therefore to an increase in the consumption of other animals.

There was a need for a protein substitute for pork that did not require special preservation techniques - explains the teacher - and for this the consumption of poultry and eggs intensified. Unfortunately, the found egg had a small crack in the shell which caused all of its contents to be dispersed. Only a little of the yolk remained, which was collected for future DNA analysis.
