Optimists, pessimists, confident and envious: the humankind can only be classified according to 4 personality types and, with all due respect to those who are targeted, it seems that envy is the master.

This is supported by the Spanish experts of the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid and those of Barcelona, Rovira i Virgili and Zaragoza, who in a study on human behavior published in the journal Science Advances revealed that 90% of the population can be classified precisely in those four basic personality types.

And right the envious are the greatest number, 30% of the total compared to 20% of each of the other groups.

THE STUDY - Experts proposed hundreds of social dilemmas to 541 volunteers, with different types of options ranging from collaboration to conflict with other people, based on individual or collective interests. The study is based on an experiment conducted at the Bau Festival, a festival of creativity and play.

After collecting the data relating to the participants, the scholars developed a real algorithm from which it emerged that the envious, who are not so interested in achieving a result as dominating others and making other people's things or situations their own, were the largest number, 30%. They are followed by the optimists, convinced of always making the best choice, i pessimists, who would always have to choose between two negative options, ei confident, more oriented towards collaboration and team play, all at 20% respectively. Finally, there is also 10% of people that the research has failed to classify into one of the four main types.

Envy, therefore, dear ones, one of the 7 deadly sins, is more among us than you think. It clicks between us, and perhaps in the age of social media it is even easier, that mechanism by which we feel diminished by the comparison with someone else and with what we have managed to achieve, an attempt to to recover the esteem in us while diminishing the skills of the other. According to psychologists, it is a real process: one passes from confrontation with the devastating impression of impoverishment to impotence and an aggressive reaction or, in the opposite way, to self-pity.

Desiring and judging are the basis of envy. The truth, fundamentally, and this research proves it, is that everyone more or less feels envy, even several times in their life. The secret? Do not be gripped by the thought that "guy has more than me" and by the suffering due to a confrontation from which you are losers (or you think you are losers). In short, envy must not become a constant state of malaise and inadequacy, but rather a warning to ourselves, a (healthy and conscious) drive to improve.
