The two sewing needles were inside the freshly opened mozzarella. The girl, of Apulian origins, immediately contacted the carabinieri reporting that she had just purchased the product at the Esselunga supermarket.

The carabinieri seized the food and also communicated the incident to the point of sale so as to retire immediately the other mozzarella with the same batch number. To make the story even stranger is the fact that the package that contained the mozzarella had no holes.

We contacted Esselunga and subsequently the brand, the Tuscan company Mukki, asking to know more details on the affair and on the mozzarella lot withdrawn as they were not initially disclosed.

The lot withdrawn

With a press release on its website, Mukki has made it known that the product withdrawn from the market is the 125 gr mozzarella expiring on 29/06/2018.

Mukki's comment

“For completeness and clarity of information, it is necessary to specify that mozzarella is a food marketed under the Mukki brand but produced by an accredited company, Valcolatte di Piacenza. According to the producer, 1920 packs of mozzarella of 125 grams belong to the lot concerned. According to a report by Valcolatte itself, there is no possibility for an object so foreign to the mozzarella production chain to end up inside a package. Mukki is in constant contact with the competent authorities, Nas dei Carabinieri and Asl, to collaborate in order to clarify the event as quickly and in depth as possible; in the interest of consumers and of the company itself, known for the wholesomeness of its food, ”he explains.

Investigations are currently underway, also with the support of the Nas of Florence.
