Adidas has sold 6 million shoes made of plastic stolen from the oceans

The plastic is recovered to produce recycled polyester yarns with which the shoes are packaged

Every minutes, everyday, we dump a truck full of plastic into the oceans which kills marine life, destroys the environment and enters the food chain.

To stop the devastating consequences that plastic waste has on the environment is fundamental reduce the production of virgin plastic.

Adidas is hitting on one line of shoes and sportswear produced with plastic waste collected before they reach the oceans and in just two years it has already sold six million pairs of shoes.

Six million pairs of recycled plastic shoes sold in two years

Two years ago, Adidas started manufacturing shoes made with recycled plastic, collected from beaches and coastal communities before it reaches the oceans.

La new line of sneakers and sportswear made with recycled plastic, born from the collaboration between Adidas and Parley to save the oceans, it is enjoying increasing success and sales are constantly increasing.

In 2017, the year the new line was launched, the company produced and sold one million shoes made with recycled yarns; in 2018 the pieces sold rose to five million and Adidas expects further growth for 2019, the year in which expects to sell as many as seven million shoes made with recycled polyester.

Adidas x Parley products were born for protect the oceans from plastic pollution. THE waste plastic come recovered before they end up in the sea and used to produce polyester yarn which is then used to make shoes and sportswear.

Each pair of shoes is at least 75% made from plastic waste subtracted from the environment: To make a pair of shoes, you need 11 plastic bottles from which you get a yarn used to create the outer design, the inner lining layers and the heel lining.

The company's goal is very ambitious: by 2024 Adidas aims in fact to completely eliminate virgin plastic and to produce all shoes and apparel using only recycled polyester.

The importance of reducing plastic production

La plastic is a versatile and economical product and polyester is the most used material in the making of sneakers and sportswear as it offers lightness, resistance and dries quickly.

Being a practically indestructible material, plastic represents one of the worst pollutants for our planet: the equivalent of a plastic truck is unloaded overboard every minute, every day, with devastating consequences on the environment and on our health.

The plastic that ends up in the seas, in fact, kills marine fauna, destroys the environment, enters the food chain and causes damage that we are not yet able to quantify for the health of all living beings on the planet.

Although the problem of ocean pollution is now well known, thehe plastic production has not yet been stopped and indeed, it continues to grow.
Eight tons of plastic waste reaches our oceans every year and, continuing at this rate, by 2050, the sea will contain more plastic than fish.

The problem of pollution caused by plastic must be solved by acting on several fronts: as many countries are doing, studying alternative materials to plastic for the production of everyday objects and correctly recycling the plastic produced so far.

It's a lot It is important that companies the size of Adidas are committed to this: if all the big brands stopped using virgin plastic and started using recycled plastic, tons of plastic would be stolen from beaches and oceans and it would avoid introducing further plastic into the environment.

And, we add, the entire supply chain should be reconsidered, also with respect for human rights.
