Aerosol: because for experts it is not useful against colds

The aerosol is useless in case of a cold, but not in specific cases.

Cold aerosol for children would be useless

Useless aerosol in case of cold, even used improperly and without any scientific evidence. Children can consider themselves free from that evil mouthpiece, because a lot, experts say, is useless.

This was supported by Susanna Esposito, pediatrician and infectious disease specialist at the University of Perugia and president of the World Association for Infectious Diseases and Immunological Disorders (WAidid), according to which 50% of the cases in which children are subjected to this treatment is completely useless.

Yet the aerosol remains one of the most used medical devices by mum and dad, often recommended as soon as the little one catches a cold. The fact is that it has one main advantage: is capable of carrying a drug in the lower airways, namely the trachea, bronchi and lungs. Additionally, it can be used to treat a number of specific ailments affecting these organs, albeit with some distinctions.

For example, aerosol is used in cases of:

    • bronchiolitis
    • asthmatic bronchitis
    • laryngitis

It is not useful, on the contrary, in cases of

    • rinofaringite
    • pharynx / tonsillitis
    • acute otitis media
    • simple cold

Finally, in case of colds and flu, always remember to:

    • make the child drink frequently
    • carry out nasal washes to eliminate mucus and phlegm (if there is excess phlegm in the upper airways the only effective practice is nasal washes with a syringe filled with physiological solution, passing the liquid from one nostril to the other to avoid bacterial nasal colonization).
Here is a video on how to do nasal washes for babies and children
    • adequately humidify the rooms (45-55%)
    • monitor the temperature in the house (which should not exceed 20 °)
    • wash your hands often
