Nina, just 4 years old, cleans the sea of plastic to prevent fish and turtles from dying

In Rio de Janeiro, 4-year-old Nina removes plastic waste from the ocean with her dad

Collects plastic from the sea 'otherwise the fish and turtles die'. She is Nina Gomes and she is only 4 years old, but she is already a mini-defender of the ocean because she and her father clean the ocean and the beaches of Rio de Janeiro of garbage.

The bay is that of Guanabara in Rio, a beautiful scenery but suffocated by plastic: bottles, glasses, straws and many other types of garbage. Nina with her dad, on board a paddle board, collects waste from the sea and says: “I do it because (otherwise) the fish and turtles die”.

As we have told you many times, the oceans contain over 165 million tons of plastic, so if effective strategies against marine pollution are not implemented by 2025, the oceans will contain 1,1 tons of plastic for every 3 tons of fish. up to the overtaking of plastic on fish. The alarm was raised some time ago by a study entitled "The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the future of plastics", carried out by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Improperly disposed of plastic ends up in the sea, destroys the marine ecosystem, suffocates fish and other inhabitants of the sea and many animals run aground on the beach with debris in their lungs and stomach.

Despite her age, Nina already has a very sensitive soul. Her father, who is a marine biologist, taught her to respect the sea from her cradle. “She is already a mini-defender of the ocean,” she explains. The girl was named the youngest 'green agent' by the municipal cleaning company (COMLURB).

According to the United Nations Environment Program, eleven million tons of plastic are thrown into the oceans every year. As we said, debris can also be deadly to seabirds that die every year by the hundreds. More than 400 distinct species of birds, fish, reptiles and mammals live in Guanabara Bay where Nina and her dad are cleaning up, according to the Brazilian Chico Mendes Institute. Not only that, the bay is a source of livelihood for 10 million people living in the surrounding areas. For this reason, the work of Nina and her father is very important for the survival of this area.

In 2017 Gomes made a film about the underwater world of Guanabara Bay, later he was inspired by the birth of his daughter to create the Instituto Mar Urbano, a group dedicated to fighting marine disasters. Now the man hopes that Nina's example will serve to inspire love and empathy towards the environment and to raise public awareness on the fight against pollution.

"Children raised only in concrete will not become defenders of nature and the ocean," says Gomes.
