To read it's good for all ages and, according to research, do it in the company of the little ones improves children's behavior and has beneficial effects even about the parents.

People who regularly read books with their children are less likely to be harsh and strict parents, while the risk of becoming hyperactive or short-tempered is lowered for the little ones. These, in summary, are the results of a study conducted by researchers at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (United States).

To reach this conclusion, the study looked at data from 2.165 mother-child pairs from 20 major US cities. The women were asked how often they read to their children between the ages of 1 and 3. The mothers were then interviewed two years later, compared to how often they had become protagonists of a type of hard parenting and we could say "hostile" but also about the behavior of their children.

They were discovered like this the benefits of reading shared between parents and children both with respect to the type of parenting that is adopted towards children (much more tolerant) and the actual behavior of children who, thanks to the good habit of reading, are less capricious and quick-tempered.

Previous studies had already shown that sharing reading helps children from an early age prepare for school by building language skills, literacy and very important affective ones. This new research, however, is probably the first to focus on how shared reading positively affects parents as well.

The study, published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, suggests additional benefits from shared reading: a stronger parent-child bond e less hyperactivity and attention problems in children.

“For parents, the simple routine of reading with a child on a daily basis provides not only academic but emotional benefits that can help strengthen the child's success in school and beyond. Our findings can be applied to programs that help parents and caregivers in poor or at-risk areas develop positive parenting skills, ”said pediatrician Manuel Jimenez, one of the study authors.

If you don't already, then remember to set aside some time each day to devote to some healthy reading together with your children! You will have the opportunity to become less strict parents and, as a result, you may notice that your children have also become more willing and less temperamental.
