Nobody would like a landfill under the house, but that of Riano is a choice that would go against the law, a landfill that would not comply with the law. Riano's choice was made by Emergency Commissioner on the basis of a specific document provided by Lazio region. Too bad, however, that the information provided by the document are not confronted with reality. In fact, in the first place, the site where the landfill should be built would be a tuff quarry abandoned, according to the authorities. But in practice, the quarry is fully functional and operational. And this being the case, it would not be possible to make it so before 2019.
Second, the landfill should be built at one distance not really suitable. As reported by the last waste management plan approved by the Region itself, there are minimum distances to be considered for the location of the landfill, which must rise no less than 1500 meters from inhabited centers and 700 from scattered houses. And in this case, the town of Monteporcino they would be well below the limits reported by the Region.
However, the president of the Ecomafie Parliamentary Commission, Gaetano Pecorella, following an inspection carried out in Riano and Corcolle reported that "regardless of the suitability of the sites, the hypothesis of temporary landfills at the beginning of next year is science fiction" since there is still no provision of the areas and it takes months ". No landfill therefore, at least for the moment. The bicameral parliamentary commission on the waste cycle has in fact rejected the idea of opening two landfills in Riano and Corcolle.
Dal canto suo, Renata Polverini, President of the Region, reiterated the need to find a situation, shortly: "I hope for a greater sense of responsibility on the part of all the political forces, of all the local institutions, because we absolutely must not ensure that Rome reaches an emergency situation such as that of Naples. Today the conditions are there to go forward. The Region has put in place the tools it had at its disposal, the prefect his personal commitment. If we are all convinced that we do not have to go to an emergency, we must prove it with facts “.
