A painting by the famous Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, on the very day of the artist's birth anniversary, was stolen from the Singer Laren museum in the Netherlands.

The thieves broke into the museum around 3.15 on Sunday evening and forced open the glass front door. The burglar alarm went off but, by the time the police arrived, the perpetrators had already disappeared. The Singer, like the other museums, is currently closed how the measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus in the Netherlands foresee.

The unknown thieves have made the titled work of art disappear "Spring garden" which depicts the garden of the rectory of Neunen in the spring of 1884.

The painting was on loan to the Singer Laren museum by the Groninger Museum and was the only work stolen on this occasion.

Singer's general manager, Jan Rudolph de Lorm, said he was "angry, shocked and sad" about the theft of the painting.

The director of the Groninger Museum is also shocked:

“It is the theft of a work that belongs to all of us,” Andreas Blühm told local newspapers.

The value of the work is not known but, obviously, since the author is Van Gogh, there is talk of a hit of some importance.

Police art theft experts are employed in the investigation. The painting was also placed on Interpol's international list of stolen works of art.
