Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Altroconsumo has tested 30 brands of wet wipes for children to evaluate the best and worst ones based on their composition but also on the expectations of those who use them. Here's what came out ...

The well-known consumer magazine sampled various brands of wipes, from the best known, to supermarket and discount products, but also sold in pharmacies and herbalists.

All have been tested by laboratory experts to evaluate their composition and quality, possibly detecting the presence of dubious ingredients. There was also a practical test by some parents, 158 people who were given 3 packs of different brands to use them on their babies.

Wipes are commonly used on babies and small children, often with a certain lightness, considering them always safe products. As Altroconsumo warns, however, there are gods risks mainly due to the sensitivity of the skin of children that in contact with these wipes could encounter problems.

What's really in baby wipes?

Altroconsumo experts have identified inside the wipes 125 different ingredients. On average, each brand contains 13 and unfortunately not all of them are harmless.
Fortunately, among the ingredients (at least in the tested wipes) there are no parabens, substances considered possible endocrine disruptors, but there is still the presence of phenoxyethanol in 10 brands of wipes. This ingredient has been considered dangerous for children under the age of 3 by the French safety agency.

In addition, some wipes contain potentially allergenic ingredients, especially for children, such as limonene and other essential oils or natural extracts (by now we know that natural doesn't necessarily mean safe). Then there are petrolatum, Benzyl Alcohol, EDTA and other substances.

How to choose a good quality wipe

Read the label it is, as always, the best weapon we have in hand for making informed purchases. Altroconsumo, and we too, recommend choosing wipes composed of as few ingredients as possible and, above all, to use them as little as possible.

Washing with soap and water is always the best choice, even for the little ass of our children (as well as for environmental issues and economic savings!).

However, if you need wipes, for example when you are away from home, you can keep in mind the indications that came out of this last test, however, it must be considered that the products analyzed were evaluated on the whole also on the basis of satisfaction in use by of parents and not only with respect to quality and ingredients list. However, an average was made.

An even better way is to make your own DIY wet wipes at home.

Baby wet wipes: 1 in 3 contains phenoxyethanol. The best and worst brands according to Altroconsumo

However, we would like to point out that both Coop and Mustela wipes contain petrolatum as well as the Talco no Talco and the Pampers. Biogenya instead contains limonene and linalool, while La Saponaria Benzyl Alcohol.

All other brands of wipes were rated average, or acceptable, with the exception of one, the absolute worst. At the bottom of the ranking with the lowest score are the "The giant" wipes. But not even the Fissan delicate wipes, the Carrefour baby fresh, the Trudi in cotton with flower nectar (which among other things contain Phenoxyethanol) and the BabyGella  and they contain 5 substances which are not really advisable.
