Here comes a new confirmation of what we have known for some time: i fruit juices contain too many sugars! To say this this time is a research carried out by the University of Liverpool which analyzed numerous products commonly found in supermarkets and intended mainly for children.

After carefully assessed the quantity of added sugars to about 200 products (drinks such as juices of fruit, smoothies and smoothies) on the UK market, the researchers concluded that most of these products contain too much sugar. In some cases the juices already contain the maximum amount of sugar that a 4-6 year old child should not exceed in a whole day (19 grams, about 5 teaspoons).

As for fruit juices specifically, we have seen that a 200 ml pack contains on average 11,2 grams of sugars. There is even more sugar then in the products in which the captivating message appears: "100% fruit", it is a good 21,4 grams per 200 ml (this way, in a single stroke, the maximum daily quantity accepted is exceeded) .

The situation gets even worse when we consider the fruit smoothies with a characteristic creamy consistency. In this case the average sugar content is 26 grams for a 200 ml pack. Truly unacceptable levels, as the researchers point out:

"It is very worrying that many parents buy fruit juices and fruit drinks for their children thinking they are choosing healthy products (…) These juices should be an occasional treat, not an everyday drink."

The damages of excessive sugar consumption are now confirmed by various scientific researches and, as is well known, especially in childhood there is a risk of favoring the onset of obesity. This is why the researchers at the conclusion of the study, published in the journal BMJ Open, advise parents to limit the use of these products to a minimum (if anything by diluting them with water) and choosing instead as much fresh fruit as possible for their children.
