This whale that swam over Kiev is made from recovered plastic waste

Ukrainian artist Valeriy Korshunov made the sculpture of a whale out of a ton of plastic waste collected from the streets of Kiev.

A ton of plastic waste to create a huge whale: this is the artistic project of Valeriy Korshunov, a sculpture installed among the Soviet-style buildings at the Kiev Exhibition Center.

Set on six metal pillars, this work of art aims to draw viewers' attention to the importance of environmental protection and recycling.

About 2.000 people, including students from the capital's schools, collected plastic waste from the city's parks and rivers. The garbage was shredded, transformed into the whale's body parts and attached to a metal frame.

There are topics that concern everyone. There are many garbage dumps in Kiev and across the country. In spring, plastic waste floated in the Tysa River. These problems exist, but we prefer to turn a blind eye. This is why I wanted to start a dialogue and involve people.

    declared the artist.

Korshunov said it was important for him to get the children to participate as well, who in this way were educated to develop ecological attitudes and learn more about separate collection.

The work symbolizes that nature risks manifesting itself only in this modern form, made of metal and recycled plastic. If we begin to understand the problem of pollution we can find the way out.
