Is called Nano Membrane Toilette and promises to bring i Toilet where unfortunately they are still missing. An innovative system capable, according to its creators, to treat human feces at home, without the need for energy and water, indeed producing energy. Impossible?

No, according to the scientists of the Cranfield University who are fine-tuning it. Currently under development, the special toilet has an innovative drain that does not require water but blocks bad odors. And that's not all: it uses a technology with a membrane to produce clean water. What remains of the solid waste is gasified and then converted into ash and energy to power the process.

Nano Membrane Toilette it is a closed system that uses a rotating barrier to separate solid and liquid waste, dividing them into a container underneath and thus blocking odors.

After using the toilet, urine and feces are removed from this rotating chamber and are then filtered through a membrane with nanotechnological holes so small that only pure water molecules can pass through. Solid and pathogenic waste, which is too large to pass through the membrane, is transferred to another chamber in the toilet.

Once the liquids are vaporized, the product is transported to another area. And this is where the steam becomes water again. The latter is then preserved and can be used both for domestic use and for gardening.

In the second chamber, a gasifier incinerates the solid waste to generate heat which can be used to feed the toilet and ash. However, this part of the innovation is still in the works.

According to researchers at Cranfield University, the water that the toilet produces is drinkable and the only waste product is the ash obtained from the combustion of solid matter.

Furthermore, this process not only produces the energy necessary to power the toilet but also generates excess energy, which can be used to power small appliances.

A solution today designed especially for populations who still do not have access to sanitation.

"One's Nano Membrane Toilette has the potential to change millions of lives by providing safe and affordable access to health services " he said the professor. Elise Cartmell, director of environmental technologies at Cranfield University.

The toilet will be tested in West Africa, specifically Ghana. The systems will be delivered to some inhabitants who will also receive a weekly visit from an expert, who will monitor their operation and carry out maintenance activities.
