Solar Schools: in the USA, photovoltaics arrive in schools thanks to crowdfunding

Fundraising to solarize the roofs of American schools has started on Indiegogo.

The National Resources Defense Council has started a fundraiser on Indiegogo to finance the installation of photovoltaic roofs on schools. And empower local communities by involving them in projects.

With photovoltaics on the roofs, schools can save a lot on electricity bills and use the money saved to fund student education programs. A bit like the University of Delaware did with wind. By giving solar energy to schools, therefore, local communities are strengthened by improving the educational standard of young people.

With this idea in mind, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC, an American environmental association with over one million members) launched the Solar Schools program, relying on the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform to collect 54 thousand dollars that you need for the first experimental projects (3, maybe 5). We are already at 17 thousand dollars raised, but there are only 22 days left for the collection to close.

Besides making a donation on Indiegogo it is also possible specify on which school you would like to see a photovoltaic roof. You can choose that of your children, as well as a different one: in the end the votes will be counted and at least one of the schools indicated will be equipped with a solar system.

Once the necessary money has been collected, the NRDC will involve local communities to define the details of the project and will try to involve activists, students, relatives and professors in the company of powering the school with the sun. This too is empowerment of the local community.
