Tilda Shalof was a nurse in the ICU of the Toronto General Hospital who during the years spent between the wards, in addition to treating patients, loved to collect cards and connectors to transform them into a work of art depicting a mandala.
A painting to hang obviously between the hospital wards. Instead of throwing away the little plastic lids, perni, leve, viti and so on, for years he has washed, disinfected and stored them.

Nurse Shalof was especially attracted to theirs bright colors and with strange and interesting shapes, so much so that for some years it has even transformed this waste into toys for her children.
We had already told you about the sand mandalas, made by Tibetan monks following a special practice called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which literally means "mandala of colored powder".

A huge collection, locked up in bags kept at home. From there the idea of giving a new life to objects. Since summer 2015, helped by the artists Vanessa Herman-Landau e Bradley Matson, Tilda Shalof has turned them into magnificent mandalas, now hanging on the wall of the hospital where she works.

In this Video, the woman shows the making process, explaining step by step what each single element of the mandala represents.
To give an example, the big orange circle it is made with bottle parts, the tops of the lancets are the heads used to measure blood sugar, in the bottom corner the drug lids to avoid rejection in the organ transplant.

A tribute that the nurse wanted to give to everyone his patients and ICU colleagues, a way to greet them before moving into radiology.
“This mandala embodies a key message: awareness. You can't see the value of these individual pieces, however by putting them together it was possible to create something extraordinary, ”says Shalof.
Even today, although the department has changed, it continues to collect plastic waste, his creativity certainly won't stop there. In the past, she had also been the author of numerous best sellers including 'A Nurse's Story'.
