Social media do not distinguish art from pornography (and continue to censor Canova)

Instagram again censors the works of Antonio Canova exhibited in the Possagno museum, once again the algorithm has the better of art

Here we go again. The shots depicting the statues of the famous sculptor Antonio Canova have been covered with red stickers on Instagram. The reason? The social algorithm is unable to distinguish an artistic nude from a pornographic content. And, once again, it is art that pays the price.

“Problems of ordinary censorship” the museum jokes Gypsotheca Antonio Canova from Possagno (Treviso), launching the hashtag #HotCanova on Instagram.

Apparently the topic is still very interesting and obviously debated. We have been living with this algorithmic illogical for a while now. - writes the Canova foundation, tired of this paradoxical situation - Sometimes reports appear, often we cannot promote events or products. One thing is certain: we do not forgive and we do not forget.

Numerous comments full of anger and indignation appeared under the post published by the Possagno museum.

“I can't believe it” someone writes, while another user comments “Our life is in the hands of algorithms”.

The issue of censorship is nothing new on Instagram. A couple of years ago it was the turn of other works by Antonio Canova, including the world-famous masterpiece “The Three Graces”, which was obscured because it was automatically considered inappropriate by the social network. Both the critic Vittorio Sgarbi, president of the Canova Foundation, intervened on the matter, announcing legal actions against Zuckerberg, and the mayor of Possagno Valerio Favero who had spoken of "obtuse obscurantism". At the time, it took more than a month to fully unlock the museum's profile.

Evidently the controversies and requests made to Zuckerberg were not enough. To get the better of art is the algorithm. Again. When will this joke end?
