Shared pencil case: so children learn to use things together and help each other

For children, you know, sharing their stuff many times is not easy. An elementary school in Trentino has decided to carry out an interesting experiment to help them work better together and help each other. This is the shared case.

For children, you know, sharing their stuff many times is not easy. An elementary school in Trentino has decided to carry out an interesting experiment to help them work better together and help each other. This is the shared case.

In the second A of the elementary school of Cadine, Trento 6 comprehensive institute, the children in the classrooms are arranged in an unusual way. A small group of students is located around desks that form a sort of island, in the center there is a wooden box (built by a grandfather among other things) full of pencils, markers and everything they need to write, draw and do chores.

It is a shared case made up of materials purchased for school, a simple object but with a great meaning that teaches him not only the value of things but also the importance and beauty of knowing how to use them together in an intelligent way.

For the teachers Gloria and Franca, who proposed the initiative to the school council already last year but who have only now been given the go-ahead, this is an experiment that is succeeding very well, which favors savings and correct use of resources but which also helps to work on an important value such as that of sharing.

    As they stated:

“It's a way to get them used to sharing, but also to help each other. Each child is different and has their own abilities, so there is always someone to help a partner "

Most of the children are enthusiastic about the project and have already understood what it is for, but of course there are also those who are nostalgic for their own pencil case. The teachers explained that families were also involved in the project and that some preparation was needed:

“The materials are all the same and were bought by the parents. We have a supply and when they run out we replenish them. Obviously, with this system, families save, but this is not our goal only. (...) Since there are two glues and scissors too, they have to get used to waiting their turn to use the materials that are already used "

This is the most educational aspect of the project, the teachers underline, together with that of help, favored precisely by the fact that children work together in small groups. In essence, the purpose of the project starts from the ambitious dream of raising children who put aside selfishness to discover within themselves and cultivate virtues such as generosity and sharing.

This isn't actually the first school in the area to experiment with the shared case. For some years now, the same initiative has been proposed to the children of the elementary schools of Cognola.

The case, in short, from a small detail becomes a symbol of a new way of teaching by teaching children something that they will carry around throughout their lives.

A simple but nice idea, don't you think?
