New milk powder test shows situation improving but still too many infant formulas are contaminated with hydrocarbons

Öko-Test had several analyzes in the laboratory brands of powdered milk for premature babies (including organic) to find inside them the possible presence of harmful substances. It is not the first time that the German magazine has dealt with this issue, in fact it had already conducted a similar test in 2019, analyzing 16 brands of milk powder.

The results of that first test had been very disheartening: almost all infant formula formulas were contaminated with hydrocarbons and pollutants.
Has the situation improved after two years? The answer is: only in part.
The results
Only two formulas are passed with full marks obtaining the score of "very good" and other 3 products were considered "good". It is therefore positive that some producers have actually made progress over the past two years to reduce the contamination of mineral oil components in milk.
Most of the milk powder, however, was still contaminated with mineral oils. The magazine specifies that it was MOSH which can accumulate in the body in organs such as the liver.
What consequences this will have in the long run is not yet clear - the German experts write.
In one case it was instead the hydrocarbons of aromatic mineral oils (MOAH).
But why are traces of mineral oils found in baby formula? The magazine explains that the contaminations could be caused by the packaging materials and lubricating greases used on production machines.
It is necessary to identify and eliminate sources of contamination during production - emphasize the German experts.
However, the good news is that, compared to the previous test, the pollutants (especially carcinogens or suspected carcinogens) derived from fats, such as 3-MCPD and glycidyl esters are definitely less.
The polluting fats that are formed during the refining of vegetable oils contained in baby food no longer seem to be a problem. Indeed, most products contain negligible traces of 3-MCPD.
Only one product was still found to be contaminated (but always below the legal limit), it is Hipp Bio Pre milk.
