Save The Children proposes that they appear on the packages of powdered milk claims in favor of breastfeeding, which highlight the weak points of powdered milk, in the same way as what already happens for packets of cigarettes.
According to the non-profit organization that made this proposal, the indications aimed at explaining the benefits linked to breastfeeding should occupy at least one third of the space present on the package and be affixed to it clearly visible, so that mothers can be informed directly to about.
With breastfeeding, according to what was communicated by Save The Children, they could save 830 children every year. The first breast milk should be given to babies within the first hour of life, in order to triple the strength of their immune systems, allowing them to survive the adverse conditions determined by the external environment.
This is not surprising, as over 700 bacteria are present in breast milk that contribute to strengthen the immune system right away of the newborn through breastfeeding, according to a recent study. Mothers should be made aware of the benefits of administering the first breast milk, called “colostrum”, and breastfeeding, so that they can make informed choices.
According to Save The Children, the major obstacle to the preference for breastfeeding consists of the marketing campaigns promoted by companies producing powdered milk (with particular reference a Nestlé e Danone), aimed at convincing mothers that their products are better than mother's milk for the health of the little ones.
In order to increase health warnings concerning theinferiority of powdered milk with respect to breast milk, a petition has been launched to argue that breastfeeding is the best choice for the baby.
What worries Save The Children most is theexport to the poorest countries of packages without proper indications, which could deceive mothers and put the lives of newborns at even more risk than it already can be. The notices affixed to the packages, in the western world, should contribute to alert the attention of mothers, prompting them to learn more about benefits of breastfeeding.
