Magnetic eyelashes: what they are and what are the side effects for the health of your eyes

They are one of the makeup trends of the moment, but are we so sure that magnetic lashes are completely risk-free? We try to clarify these products and their use

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

The make-up universe is populated by the most bizarre inventions, unfortunately not all healthy and sustainable from an environmental point of view. Today we are talking about false eyelashes - more precisely, magnetic eyelashes: unlike traditional false eyelashes, which are applied with the help of a special glue, these contain tiny magnets that allow them to "stick" to the upper lids.

This is a recently invented technology, which replaces the most harmful glues often responsible for unpleasant side effects - first of all, the detachment of real eyelashes, which “fall out” due to the stress caused by glue and solvents. However, these new products may not necessarily be completely risk-free, especially if they are not used correctly.

Magnetic lashes or magnetic eyeliner?

THEmagnetic eyeliner is a liquid product, designed as a complement to magnetic lashes as it supports them and helps them stay in position: it is made up of mineral pigments, such as iron oxide, with magnetic power.

Iron oxide could trigger allergic reactions, such as eczema or dermatitis: if we use the product for the first time, do a test by putting a small amount of product on the skin of the arm and wait 24 hours for any rush to appear.

Le magnetic eyelashes, considered safer than sticking lashes, contain small magnets that allow them to be used and adhered to real lashes. They are usually made from synthetic hair but sadly, some products are made from animal hair or human hair.

Effetti collaterali

Many people prefer the use of these two products to traditional false eyelashes, deeming them safer for health as they do not anticipate the need for chemical glues, but the risks exist even if you use these products.

First of all, it is essential to pay attention that the eyeliner does not end up inside the eye rim, to prevent the product from blocking the sebaceous glands of the eyelid and creating inflammation inside the eye. Furthermore, as already mentioned, there is a risk that the product may cause an allergic reaction, even a serious one.

Using magnetic lashes is not without risk either. If pulled off incorrectly and without due care, the magnets contained in these products can tear out real lashes and damage hair follicles. Therefore, we suggest that you detach the magnets very slowly and read the product instructions carefully before use.

One last recommendation before applying magnetic eyelashes: never do it if we know we need to undergo clinical tests such as magnetic resonance. As demonstrated by a recent study, inside the "tube" of the magnetic resonance these products can detach from the eyelids with violence and turn into real bullets.

How to use these products correctly

  • After making sure that the presence of iron oxide does not cause allergies to our skin, we carefully wash our hands before touching the eyes and eyelashes: this small gesture will help prevent any infections.
  • If we are going to use other types of eye makeup as well (such as eye shadows), let's apply them before moving on to false eyelashes, which will have to be the last product we will use.
  • When positioned correctly, these lashes are designed to stay in place all day (they are also water resistant); however, we pay attention not to wrinkle the eyes and not to touch them often with the hands, in order not to move the application.
  • To remove the magnetic lashes, at the end of the day, we gently detach the lashes from one side and the other, taking care not to tear the real hairs attached to the eye rim, then take a cotton pad soaked in make-up remover and remove any trace of magnetic eyeliner before it can end up inside the eye.
