It took three months to set up the art exhibition in the city of Gresik, in the east of the island of Java (Indonesia), and well 10.000 plastic objects recovered from beaches and waterways. Straws, bottles, grocery bags, plates and other single-use plastic items have become parts of works of art in this large open-air museum, and the message is clear: the pollution of our seas by plastic waste is reaching critical levels, for this a change of course is necessary immediately.

The 'highlight' of the collection is a sculpture called goddess Sri, named after the goddess of prosperity much revered by the inhabitants of Java: her long skirt was made with bags of home care products, as seen in this video:

With this exhibition, we want to invite people to stop using single-use plastic items - said the curator of the 'museum', the ecologist Prigi Arisandi. - Plastic remains a very difficult material to recycle and pollutes the oceans, which are also our food source.

The problem of plastic is particularly felt in Indonesia, second only to China in the amount of plastic items that end up in the sea every year. But not only: together with the Philippines and Vietnam, China and Indonesia are the four countries responsible for more than half of the plastic waste present in the oceans, and unfortunately there are still no effective laws regulating the use of single-use plastics in these countries.

The exhibition, which only opened last month, is having a moderate success in visits: many tourists choose to take a selfie with a sea of plastic bottles hanging from the ceiling in the background, then sharing it on their social accounts to spread the message of raising awareness of the use of plastics.
