Instead of the common balls there are cans, flip flops, plastic bottles and other numerous waste found on the beach. A very special Christmas tree that has been set up these days in Fiumicino, a stone's throw from Rome and which has as its objective a environmentalist message.

The plastic tree was created and designed by Toni Quaranta, the mayor's delegate for Bathing Policies who writes on his Facebook profile:

“More than a Christmas tree, I would interpret it as a plastic sacrifice to the sea. Let's go back to the origins with the hope that the sea will appreciate the gesture and help us to spend a less stormy winter ".

It all started by chance, Quaranta with some friends collected the waste found on the beach after the last storm and decided to turn them into decorations for a Christmas tree that is now right on the coast.

“I would like there to be a tree like this in every point of the coast, above all to give a message and a signal to the children, who are our future, and to make the coast cleaner”, says Quaranta.

Behind the imagination and creativity, however, there is an alarming problem, that ofmarine pollution mainly caused by man who destroys the ecosystem and biodiversity, creating damage to plants and animals. It is not the first time that we have talked about it, according to a recent study if we continue at this rate, by 2050 the oceans will welcome more plastic than fish precisely because in addition to direct pollution, 32% of plastic objects globally escape to collection systems and is abandoned in nature.

A sea of garbage, because the oceans already contain over 165 million tons of plastic, so if by 2025 effective strategies against marine pollution are not implemented, the oceans will contain 1,1 tons of plastic for every 3 tons of fish up to overtaking of plastic on fish.

"I do not hide - says Quaranta that I am worried for the future and for the new generations".
