The TAR suspends the single-use plastic bans

In Sicily, the TAR accepted the appeal of the producers of disposable tableware against the ordinances banning the use of plastic.

La war on plastic promoted by some Sicilian municipalities risks a defeat following the decision of Tar of Sicily.

The Regional Court has indeed the appeal against the plastic free ordinances accepted adopted by the Municipality of Santa Flavia, in the province of Palermo, and by the Municipality of Trapani. The ordinances prohibited the use of single-use plastic items. The plastic free ordinance remains instead still valid in Palermo in the Mondello, Sferracavallo and Addaura areas, where it will remain in force throughout the summer.

Il appeal was carried on by disposable tableware manufacturers and promoted by Rubber Plastic Federation-Unionplast and accepted by the Regional Court which suspended the ordinances.

According to the manufacturers, there is no need to ban the use of single-use plastics and indeed, the ban would cause serious damage and useless to companies and employees working in the sector.

The Director General of the Plastic Rubber Federation, Angelo Bonsignori, stated that:
Correct waste management must have as a first step the fight against the abandonment of waste, of any material: at the basis of the dispersion of waste in the environment there are bad behaviors and those that must be demonized

The Rubber Plastic Federation therefore sees no urgent need to intervene in favor of the environment and, following the suspension of the ordinances by the TAR, it did not exclude any other appeals against other administrations that have adopted similar measures.

Luckily there are those who will continue on the path taken despite the blocking of ordinances. Some beaches in the Municipality of Santa Flavia have decided to use biodegradable plastic and will continue to do so even after the ban has been lifted.

The owner of the Lido Porto di Spagna agreed with the Municipality:

It all depends on the production cycle, on the recycling of plastic, and in this sense our country is behind. If we were able to recycle in a serious way, there can be the strengthening of separate collection but everything must be supported by serious recycling and I think this is not yet there. I understand the reasons of the Rubber Plastic Federation, behind there is a market, but at the moment the shortest step to take is the elimination of these products because there are more complex situations to manage.

Of the same opinion Giovanni Ribaudo, owner of the Fondachello beach:

We too have adapted by conforming the purchases and we have carried out awareness campaigns. We no longer use plastic straws and have cornstarch paper coffee cups. We also changed the trash bags. We believe the ordinance is useful: we work with the environment, if we do not protect it we will only continue to exploit environmental resources
