Olieco: long life for used frying oil

Olieco: long life for used frying oil

Fried oil can become fuel thanks to the Oileco project, supported by the Intelligent energy for Europe program

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Fried oil or used vegetable oil it will no longer be a waste but a real one fuel to reuse. And that's why Ecosolutions, inside the Oileco project, is trying to create a collection of the so-called Oapc (Olio alimentare postconsumo) gives trasfomare in fuel.

And like all simple ideas, it's a great gimmick. In the first place because in this way it will be possible to dispose of or better find a better location for used oils, which must be carefully differentiated, even in the home. Second, these substances can be given new life, fueling vehicles, public lighting and buildings.

And that's no small feat, considering that between industrial and domestic oil, the average annual per capita collection is 4,5 kg. The project is partially funded by the program Intelligent energy for Europe which for some time has aggregated various European partners, giving a greater boost to the collection and enhancement of used cooking oils in an energetic sense.

Il Oileco project therefore has the objective of promoting partnerships that consolidate or inaugurate from scratch the recovery and reuse of fried oils, promoting local supply chains aimed at intercepting the oils of a defined territory and transforming them into energy, electricity, fuel for local transport, as well as "secondary raw material replacing virgin materials and characterized by greater energy efficiency ".

Michele Faberi, Ecosoluzioni energy enhancement expert explained that oil "is a full-fledged fuel, comparable for example to palm oil that can be used immediately for both boilers and diesel engines (even if it is more acidic ) or it can be transformed into biodiesel". According to Faberi, moreover, "there is a willingness on the part of families to harvest but not all municipalities are ready".

Just come on Municipality therefore, the push to collect used oils should start, not only those concerning the "commercial" sector which includes restaurants and food chains but also those domestic. According to the expert, however, in order for the investment to be convenient, it is still necessary to have a catchment area of about 150-200.000 inhabitants, aiming at the short supply chain.

The idea is there. What are we waiting for to make it happen? Meanwhile, in our small way we continue to collect and sort the fried oil, waiting for that sooner or later (we hope sooner!) can return to a new life.
