Get rid of single-use plastic from the shelves! Supermarkets anticipate the European ban on disposable tableware

Federdistribuzione has banned the use of single-use plastic products by member companies, anticipating the EU ban expected by 2021

Supermarkets play early and start implementing the ban on disposable tableware expected by Europe by 2021

By 2021 single-use plastic products such as cutlery, plates, straws, sticks, food containers, will be completely banned in the EU, but Federdistribuzione has decided to anticipate the times, putting the obligation into practice already from now on.

The intention is to begin to remove disposable plastic tableware from all associated points of sale, as President Claudio Gradara stated, in order to be able to completely remove them by 30 June 2020. Because a gradual elimination process, which respects the European directives and which at the same time involves the entire production chain, is certainly more effective than a last minute removal.

"We have made a specific commitment with the associated companies: from 1 July this year we will combine disposable plastic products with other products in recyclable and compostable material, offering a concrete alternative to ai clienti, and within the deadline of June 30, 2020, all disposable plastic tableware will come out permanently from our shelves. I do not exclude that some companies may anticipate these times "

Federdistribuzione's goal is also to encourage consumers to take a different, more eco-friendly attitude. Because you know, to change habits it takes time, as well as good will. Certainly a commendable initiative, to be imitated, although the deadlines sanctioned by Europe are a bit longer given that the ban will be activated by 2021.

The target? Obviously reduce environmental pollution, which unfortunately is causing very serious damage to the planet. And plastic, as is well known, is one of the worst enemies of the environment, including the sea, where it has even become the favorite food of corals. Fortunately, other countries have also begun to ban it, just think of the case of Canada.
