Christmas songs are loved by young and old and there are those who sing or whistle them as soon as you start to breathe the typical atmosphere of the holidays. But why do they like them so much? Le Christmas songs they are loved by young and old and there are those who sing or whistle them as soon as you start to breathe the typical party atmosphere. But why do they like them so much? It was revealed by a real scientific research aimed at the creation of a new, perfect and potentially super-loved Christmas song.

There are many pieces of music born on the occasion of the holidays in past years and often become great hits (think for example of the songs of Michael Bublè). But we probably never stopped to think about the real reasons why these songs are generally so loved. What we don't realize, on inexperienced and distracted listening, is that behind the words, melodies and sounds are some key elements that may have helped these songs rise to the top of the charts during the holidays.

Science has also been interested in this topic, which wanted to identify what could be the fundamental elements to create the perfect Christmas music thus helping songwriters to compose new hit songs suitable for the holidays.

Musicologist Joe Bennett, vice president of academic affairs at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, did extensive research into the psychology of songwriting and was asked to lend a hand with a commercial research project that would be used to create a new piece of music suitable for the holiday season.

To achieve his goal, Bennett studied the more than 200 most popular songs on Spotify during the week of Christmas 2016. Of each the researcher analyzed the musical key, the tempo, the lyric theme and the characteristics of the singer who brought them. to success by drawing up the following ranking of the 10 best songs:

    • “All I Want for Christmas Is You” Mariah Carey
    • “Last Christmas” Wham!
    • “Fairytale of New York” The Pogues (feat. Kirsty MacColl)
    • “Merry Christmas Everyone” Shakin’ Stevens
    • “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” Andy Williams
    • “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Band Aid
    • “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” Michael Bublé
    • “I Wish It Could Be Christmas” Everyday Wizzard
    • “Step Into Christmas” Elton John
    • “Wonderful Christmas time” Paul McCartney

He found that the most popular Christmas songs were sung in a major key with an average tempo of 115 beats per minute. As for the contents, however, reference was made to Santa Claus, the snow, the house and feelings such as love and peace. There were also the sounds of bells or the sound of the sleigh carrying gifts.

Based on the study results, songwriters Harriet Green and Steve Anderson have written a new Christmas carol. This is the song "Love's Not Just For Christmas" recorded by the London Community Gospel Choir that you can listen to in the following video:
