The boat had got stuck in January 1915 between the perennial arctic ice, only to be shipwrecked in November. Shackleton and his men had miraculously managed to escape to safety, and then boarded small boats to South Georgia where they sought desperate help and had seen their ship lost forever, as it disappeared into the depths of the abyss.

After more than a century, a team of scientists from the Endurance22 expedition, a project coordinated by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, has finally found the lost wreck at a depth of 3.000 meters, using first the South African icebreaker Agulhas II and then the remote-controlled submarines it is equipped with that inspected the vast area of the Weddell Sea where it was assumed that the boat might be, until it was found in recent days.
