Un precious manuscript of 1838 with the memories of the ancient rulers Ever it was finally recovered after more than a century.

The manuscript, entitled "Memories of the Peruvian monarchy or portrait of the history of the Incas", was written by Justo Apu Sahuaraura Inca, descendant by maternal line of the Inca emperor Huayna Cápac and Prince Christopher Paullo Inca and lived between 1775 and 1853 .

Sahuaraura, a member of the indigenous nobility of Cusco, researcher, Catholic priest and hero of the Independence of Peru, dedicated himself to saving the memory of the Inca empire and called himself "the last descendant of the imperial dynasty of the Incas".

To write the rediscovered text, Sahuaraura consulted documents now unobtainable thanks to which he was able to describe the Inca period until the arrival of the Spaniards in the XNUMXth century.

The document contains information on the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, America's first intellectual mestizo (1539-1616), as well as a series of accounts of the Spanish entry into Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire in southeastern Peru.

The document was unfortunately disappeared from the National Library during the Pacific War (1879-1884), when Chilean troops occupied the city of Lima.

Once arrived in Chile, the manuscript is ended up in the hands of collectors who never gave it to libraries. It was later discovered that the document had entered the collection of a Brazilian family in 1970: following negotiations, the family agreed to return it to the National Library of Peru last November.

“The value of this 1838 document is incalculable. It has always been considered an extremely rare jewel, we have no other manuscripts of this nature ”, explained Gerardo Trillo, director of protection of the collections of the National Library.
