Goodbye to plastic: Nesquik launches cardboard packaging. Real green turning point?

It is not a real green turning point, but it is certainly already a step forward even if perhaps it will not make all consumers happy. Nestlè announces the European launch of Nesquik All Natural with lidless, fully recyclable packaging with more genuine ingredients, but it could cost up to 50% more.

It is not a real green turning point, but it is certainly already a step forward, even if perhaps it will not make all consumers happy, especially those who are more attentive to what they buy. Nestlè announces the European launch of Nesquik All Natural with lidless packaging, fully recyclable and with more genuine ingredients, but it could cost up to 50% more.

“We are proud to be able to launch Nesquik All Natural as a new addition to the range, offering parents a natural option with a simplified ingredient list, more cocoa and less sugar in recyclable paper packaging. This is part of our commitment at Nestlé to offer more natural, sustainable and nutritious choices, while maintaining the great taste that people know and love, ”reads the press release.

In the press release, however, no reference is made how much it will cost this change, to consumers, but according to FoodNavigator, the final price of Nesquik All Natural will be 40-50% more per kilo. According to the multinational, however, the increase should not be attributed to sustainable packaging, but to the higher quality of the ingredients.

“Nesquik All Natural presents a simplified list of just five natural ingredients. It has more cocoa and therefore a richer cocoa taste than existing Nesquik products. It also has less sugar than the current classic product and uses raw cane sugar rather than processed white sugar. The cocoa comes responsibly from West Africa as part of Nestlé's cocoa plan ”.

How is this new packaging made?

Second Sarah Divanbeigi, Nestlé packaging specialist:

“The packaging in this particular sector is quite fragile, it doesn't hold up well in a factory environment, it doesn't travel well in the supply chain, to address these challenges cartons are usually laminated with a layer of plastic. For the Nesquik All Natural range, instead of using a laminate we used a coated paper. It is a material approved for food contact and protects the product but is also recyclable in the paper stream ”.

We will see, in the meantime, however, only one certainty remains, of which we spoke only a few days. For the German magazine Eco test, the Nestlé Nesquik which has been evaluated "insufficient" for too high levels of sugar and artificial vitamins. Excessive traces of mineral oils were found inside, meaning it was heavily contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.

Nestlé had intervened on the matter by questioning the detection methods, but apparently in the end, a little something is reviewing it.
