Farewell to Yasuo Otsuka, legendary animator of Lupine III and Conan

The Japanese master of character designers Yasuo Otsuka leaves us at the age of 89. Lupine III is linked to his name.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

We have those colored Lupine jackets impressed in our minds, as he flees on that yellow 500 under unlikely showers of bullets. All color choices made not by chance by the Japanese master of character designers Yasuo Otsuka, who passed away at the age of 89.

The world of comics is inextricably linked to him to "Lupine III" and "Conan the boy of the future", but not everyone knows that at Toei Animation he mentored the two future founders of Studio Ghibli a few decades ago, Hayao Miyazaki (who in 2004 will dedicate a documentary to his teacher: Ōtsuka Yasuo no ugokasu yorokobi - The joy of animating by Yasuo Ōtsuka) and Isao Takahata.

In addition to the animations of "Lupine III" that we said, of which he edited the first two TV series and many of the films and specials, once he joined the staff of Nippon Animation, Otsuka also directed the animation of the series "Conan the boy from future ”and the action scenes of“ Sherlock Holmes' nose ”. Among the other works of which he directed the animation, the two films of “Panda! Go Panda "and other" Lupine III "feature films, such as" Lupine III - The Fuma Conspiracy "in 1987 and" Lupine III - The Prophecies of Nostradamus "in 1995.

In recent years he has been teaching animation techniques at the Yoyogi Animation Academy and in 2019 he received a special award from the Japan Academy Film Prize Association.
