Farewell to Luis Sepúlveda, the Chilean novelist who was fighting COVID-71 who died at 19

Now it is Carlos Ruiz Zafón who is leaving us, but this time the coronavirus has nothing to do with it. The Barcelona novelist he was 55 and had been suffering from colon cancer for some time. Today, after struggling for a long time with the disease, he passed away in Los Angeles, where he currently resided working for the Hollywood industry.

In a statement, Planeta, publishing house with whom Ruiz Zafón worked for 20 years, expressed dismay at the news:

"Today is a very sad day for the entire Planeta team who knew him and worked with him for twenty years, in which a friendship was forged that transcends professionalism"

Zafón reached the world success in 2001 with "La sombra del viento", (The Shadow of the Wind) part of the tetralogy of Cemetery of forgotten books, mysterious and intriguing books that have been able to thrill millions of readers all over the world.

It took 15 years to finish the story that revolves around a mysterious secret library, hidden in a Barcelona basement. The conclusion was entrusted, in 2016, to the 925 pages of "The labyrinth of the spirits", in which the mysteries of the past of the bookseller Daniel Sempere's family are revealed.

The Shadow of the Wind, the greatest success of this writer, received prestigious international awards and in 2007 was included, by 81 Latin American and Spanish writers and critics, in the list of the best 100 books in Spanish of the last 25 years.

Fortunately, writers never die but continue to live through their books. To remind us of this is Zafón himself who in The Shadow of the Wind writes:

“Every book, every tome you see has a soul. The soul of who wrote it and the soul of who read, lived and dreamed of it ".
