McDonald's exercise bikes in China produce energy, so customers pedal while they eat, recharging their mobile devices.

Images of McDonald's customers pedaling while they eat have gone around the world. They are exercise bikes that produce energy to charge smartphones and other mobile devices.

McDonald's is testing a new product that's not quite on its menu: exercise bikes instead of chairs for its customers. After a video that went viral, with over 37 million views, the fast food giant confirmed the news indicating that the bicycles were installed in two Chinese places, in the Jieyang Wanda restaurant in Guangdong province and in the New Hualian restaurant in Shanghai. .

In the images circulating on social media you can see how people eat ice cream or a hamburger at McDonald's while pedaling on stationary bikes. Some media broke the news as if it were a (absurd) pro "fitness" initiative. However, the fast food chain has specified that bicycles are not used to burn calories while eating, but to generate electricity.

In fact, the new invention of the fast food chain, to distract us and groped to appear green, are these exercise bikes that are part of the Upcycle for Good project by McDonald's China. The company explained that bicycles are designed to inspire “greener behaviors” as customers eat junk food, two actions that brutally collide creating the antithesis of our times.

The bike generates electricity to power everyday devices such as cell phones and is part of McDonald's China's “Upcycle for Good” project, an initiative focused on creating products with plastic parts from recycled materials, ”McDonald's said.

Without considering the fact that mealtime is one of the worst times for physical activity, there is a good deal of greenwashing at stake in this initiative. Consumers should be aware that if multinationals wanted to be truly sustainable, there would be other actions to be taken, starting - for example in the case of McDonald's - from intensive farming. What do you think about it?
