Enough of low-cost meat: in Germany the proposal that is shaking the German agri-food lobbies

Cem Yozdemir, German Minister of Agriculture wants to improve the quality of food and reduce the consumption of fats, salts and sugars

Stop the consumption of low cost meat and low quality foods! Non wastes time Cem Yozdemir, new German Minister of Agriculture and Food who in the first month of work has already attracted the criticisms and doubts of the Teutonic agri-food industry lobby. His battle against the production of low-cost foods has just begun and he intends to continue it because it is necessary to stop the progressive impoverishment of companies in the sector, the extinction of species and the aggravation of the climate.

The German Obama, as it has often been defined, intends to pursue a policy based on the connection between the environment and the economy. Yozdemir proposes to improve the quality of food and variety in nutrition, also reducing the consumption of fats, salts and sugars; he also wants to put at the center of his action a positive change in the working conditions of those who work in this sector, often exploited and underpaid.

These positions have found conflicting opinions. If on one hand many farmers seem to welcome these proposals, especially those who produce good quality meat, many meat producers are among the most fervent opponents. But there are also the questions some experts ask about the cost of transitioning to more extensive organic farming.

It has been found that industrial agriculture causes about 90 million euros of environmental damage every year but, at the same time, it has been calculated that with a different type of production a kilo of beef could cost up to 80 euros per kilo in addition to up to 4-fold increase in the prices of dairy products. The question he asks himself is who will have to pay more: producers, breeders or consumers?

However, the German minister's projects, which have been vegan for several years, have a community foundation. The reduction of meat consumption is part of the European Farm to Fork strategy, which also aims to reduce the impact on the environment, to ensure equal access to food, to the promotion of a more sustainable economy. This last point is also part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023-2027 promoted by the Council of the European Union which also includes targeted support for small farms.

The issues raised by Minister Yozdemir are certainly central and the debate on the subject will continue in the short and medium term.
