Methane emissions from one of the largest intensive cattle farms in the world captured for the first time by satellites

For the first time in the world, methane emissions from factory farms have been seen by satellites. The images show the bewildering reality of the meat industry from the perspective of global warming and its devastating impact on the climate crisis

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Of the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving our climate mad, methane CH4 accounts for a quarter of the dangerous gases released into the atmosphere, having become 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide according to estimates over the past 84 years. This is because 60% of methane is generated by human activities which have increased considerably over two centuries.

According to the FAO, 15% of this percentage is attributable only to the meat industry, whose production certainly does not go unnoticed when analyzing global emissions of anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

Indeed, the methane emissions released by cattle farms were captured for the first time by three high-resolution satellites of the company GHGSat, whose technology provides environmental data and an interactive map, giving an global picture of all CH4 emissions of the entire planet.

Last February, the company's satellites took snapshots of an area of California, in the Joaquin Valley, where a large beef cattle farm is located, capturing an amount of methane emissions that could power 15.402 American homes.

Livestock farming has a huge weight on California's economy, making it the fifth largest US state for producing beef.
