Eliminate meat production in 15 years? The numbers are astounding, it could really save the planet

A recent study shows the impact of meat production on the climate crisis and how without emissions we could reduce, thus saving our Earth

The meat industry is destroying the planet at an impressive rate and the consequences that this has on the climate crisis, on global deforestation and not least on human health are obvious or at least they should be. In fact, meat production represents about 20% of world greenhouse gas emissions and livestock farming occupies 70% of all agricultural land in the world, unsustainable costs for our planet in the long run.

For this reason, a recent study published in the journal PLOS Climate and conducted by University of California Berkeley biologist and professor Michael B. Eisen and Stanford University biochemist Patrick O. Brown, as well as CEO of the vegetable brand Impossible Foods, points out. the urgency of a radical change to stabilize greenhouse gas levels over the next 30 years. And this change, according to experts, is only possible through the gradual elimination of animal husbandry and the reintroduction of spontaneous crops and vegetation.

The study analyzed the impact of meat production on global warming, using a climate model that made it possible to estimate the emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nyrous oxide in the atmosphere up to 2100 and this model showed that the elimination of the meat industry would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 68% by the end of the century, stabilize general greenhouse gas levels and recover endangered biodiversity.

According to Eisen and Brown, the hypothesized scenario is therefore achievable through the transition to a diet that is as vegetable as possible that can feed all the peoples of the world, fight food insecurity even the poorest countries on the planet and the climate crisis, keeping the rise in global temperatures within 1.5 ° C.

However, the experts are aware that this proposal will encounter many resistances and obstacles not only for the discussion of the intake of animal proteins and their replacement. Meat, milk and eggs, as well as other foods of animal origin, are the basis of almost every diet in the world, but the costs and effects of their production are leading to a climate disaster.
