Il Danish government will purchase the last four elephants currently exploited in two circuses of the country, to retire them.

This was announced by Minister Mogens Jensen: Djunga, Ramboline Lara and Jenny - these are the names of the four specimens - will be purchased for one and a half million euros and will come transferred to a zoo, where they will be guaranteed maximum well-being for the last years of their life.

"I am sorry to say goodbye to our three elephants, but at the same time I am delighted that they can now retire from work and enjoy their well-deserved retirement," said Benny Berdino, director of the Circus Arena, from which the government will buy three of the four elephants.

The Minister took the opportunity to announce that in October, when the Danish Parliament reopened, will present a bill to prevent the use of elephants, zebras and sea lions in circuses.

"Wildlife does not belong to a permanent or circus arena, and when Parliament opens I will present a proposal for a new law on animal welfare so that we can finally ban wild animals in the circus," these are the words of the Minister.

In Denmark, as well as in many Western countries, thethe use of wild animals in circuses is highly controversial and we hope that the bill will be approved as soon as possible.

Fortunately, the trend is towards the ban on the use of wild animals in circuses and many states have already passed laws to stop the exploitation of lions, tigers, zebras and camels during shows. However, wild animals are still used in 40 countries, 19 of which are in Europe.

In addition to wild animals, dogs, horses and birds also perform in circuses and hopefully you will get to laws that prohibit the exploitation of these animals as well.

And we hope that the same attention will also be placed on the question of whaling in the Faroe Islands.
