The recipients are TripAdvisor e Lonely Planet which, despite the commitment not to carry this kind of tourism, had not yet eliminated it from their sites.

    - elephants they are notoriously sociable and intelligent creatures, characteristics that appeal to the tourism industry, which does not care at all about the abuse, torture and often even the death of young specimens, trained and held captive to entertain visitors.

It must be remembered, even if it seems superfluous, that these are wild animals kept in captivity. Although domesticated and born in captivity, captive elephants still retain many of their natural instincts and behaviors of life in the wild.

To force them to behave unnaturally to make a profit, trainers (called mahouts) perform acts of incredible cruelty on these animals, a practice known as Phajaan.

What's it about? Baby elephants are locked up in wooden crates, their legs crushed and their bodies stabbed. These torture they go on for years until the spirit of the animal is bent and subjected to the orders of man. Many elephants don't survive not even the brutality of this pseudo-training.

For every elephant that gives Thailand sightseeing tours, four are killed. At this rate, the Asian elephant population will go extinct within 5 years.

Last year Stephen Kaufer of TripAdvisor had pledged to stop selling tickets on the site and to launch the portal where tourists could learn about attractions that exploit animals.

"TripAdvisor announced in October 2016 its commitment to introduce a number of one-of-a-kind initiatives, which include policy changes on sale of tickets for attractions involving animalsie the launch of a new educational portal to help travelers become aware of the standards of care for protected, wild and captive species in the tourism sector, their interaction with tourists and their impact on the protection of wild animals. Following this announcement, TripAdvisor and its brand Viator have suspended the sale of tickets for sightseeing experiences where travelers come into physical contact with wild animals in captivity or with endangered species, including attractions that include elephant rides, petting tigers and swimming with dolphins, among others. TripAdvisor has also developed and launched an educational portal related to attractions involving animals featured on TripAdvisor. The portal, currently available in English (at the following link) and soon available in others languages, contains links and information on animal welfare practices, helping travelers to write more informed reviews about their experiences and to become aware of existing opinions on the implications and benefits of safeguarding certain tourist attractions ”.
