Africa mourns the disappearance of the elephant Tolstoy, who died of a lance wound

The elephant Tolstoy was one of the symbols of Kenya and all of Africa and died in recent days in the protected natural park where he lived. The reserve rangers had noticed spear wounds on the pachyderm which, despite veterinary care, did not make it.

In the Amboseli National Park, a protected nature reserve located in Kenya not far from the border with Tanzania, an elephant, symbol of the entire African continent, has died. His name was Tolstoy and he was 51 years old.

The elderly pachyderm lived in the National Park in the custody of the rangers of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Big Life Foundation, an NGO active in the country in the fight against poaching and in the protection of elephants and rhinos.

It had been inflicted on Tolstoy a deep blow of the spear about 6 weeks ago, almost certainly by a local farmer annoyed by the presence of the pachyderm.

His wound was promptly treated by two veterinary units of the Kenya Wildlife Service who also administered specific treatments to the animal. However, the risk of Tolstoy contracting an infection was very high.

Despite the treatment he received, Tolstoy had been spotted lying in an area of the park, which is very unusual for an elephant. In fact, he had serious difficulties in pulling himself on him and no rescue team had been able to help him, considering the enormous lost of the pachyderm.

On April 28, the Big Life Foundation shared the news of his death, describing the moment as "the saddest ever".

Today is the saddest day of my ranger job, I lost one of the elephants I cared about most. We tried to do everything we could. I thought he would wake up, but he just couldn't get up,

    ranger Job Lekanayia said.

Tolstoy was victim of the human-wildlife conflict, a conflict that over the years has worsened more and more and which has led to the extermination of many animal species by humans, who have entered into competition with other forms of life to exploit the increasingly scarce resources of the territory.
