Dangerous salmon farms: Dozens of sea lions have been trapped in nets

Bad misfortune in Canada for a group of sea lions: dozens of specimens were trapped in nets as they attempted to feast on salmon at an aquaculture facility

Attracted by the huge amount of salmon, several sea lions flew into a plant in aquaculture Canadian to have a good feast. But the ending was by no means the best. Dozens of specimens, in fact, were entangled in the nets, risking to injure themselves and die of suffocation.

The incident happened a few days ago in the Rant Point farm, near Tofino (in British Columbia), owned by the Cermaq company (which raises salmon and trout in Norway, Canada and Chile). The local environmental group Clayoquot Action, who shared the dramatic photos showing the poor sea lions in distress and trapped in their nets, denounced the event and raised the alarm for the fate of these mammals.

It is not the first time that sea lions have managed to enter the farm, which can hold up to 500 salmon. There had already been a similar precedent at the end of March and now the aquaculture giant Cermaq is increasingly annoyed by these "property violations".

But for their part, animal welfare organizations are strongly concerned about sea lions, given that in the past dozens of them have died after being entangled in nets and the same fate has also befallen some seals.

"This situation that is happening right now with sea lions is just another reminder of the many impacts these farms are having on the marine environment and our wild salmon," said Bonny Glambeck, activist for Clayoquot Action.

Following the sea lions episode, the huge salmon farm managed by Cermaq once again ended up at the center of controversy and the public debate on the heavy impacts of aquaculture has reopened.

Why do we allow this foreign company to pollute our waters in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve? - Clayoquot Action volunteers ask. Fish farms clearly have no respect for wildlife and what sustains life on the west coast. Let's finish with this 30-year occupation of destruction and lies.

For some time the association has been fighting against salmon farms, which are compromising the marine ecosystem, and just for today it has organized a flashmob to ask for the elimination of fish farms in Canada as soon as possible.
